Eastern Market: the farmers market
Located in South-East Washington since 1873, on Capitol Hill, Eastern Market is quite the DC landmark. It recently suffered a fire and is temporarily relocated across the street -happily the old vendors are all there.
In their Food Market, they have over 175 stalls selling meats, vegetables, fish, pasta, pastry, baked goods and cheese. It is open 7 days a week, and is packed on the weekends where they have produce from local producers in Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware in addition to the regular vendors.
As well as edibles, on Sunday there is a Flea Market where the focus is on antiques, arts, collectibles, crafts and imports. You can find some beautiful one-off pieces of jewellery and meet with the artists themselves.
G went to the Farmers Market this morning, and came home laden with fresh fuits, vegetables and mozarella.
There is one vegetable and fruit stall you must visit. The lady who works on the stall hand-shells every pea in front of you and pops them into a plastic bag. The peas are bigger than the ones you find frozen or prepacked at supermarkets -and the fact that they are straight from the pod makes them all the more appealing. By the way, her pears are highly recommended...
Another stall you must visit is for your meat. Every kind and cut of fresh meat you can think of -this chap has it. This is the larger of the two butchers currently there. Tell him you want to make a stock and he will tell you which is the best cut of meat and why. He's a real butcher, not just someone who sells meat. G came home with a massive cut of meat for stock. 4lbs worth. Holy cow. Literally.
As for me -I have only been to Eastern Market once in the past two years, and this last time I didn't actually make it to the "actual" market. I was driving myself, got within spitting distance, couldn't find anywhere to park, took a wrong turn and ended up in Virginia. I need to go back soon.
