sushi taro: 17th and P St NW
we got a table for 2 at 9.30pm by calling at 8.30pm on Saturday night. apparently dc eaters like to do stuff after dinner such as dancing and the like - we on the other hand like to sleep.
we sat in a booth in the long narrow part just beyond the drinks bar. we had privacy and the service was very good.
we started with eel liver (1) and herring roe (2).
the liver was lovely - full of flavour and not too old school liver makes you retch. when eaten with a sliver of ginger it was even better.
the herring roe surprised me. the texture was incredibly crispy - probably because it wasn't separate little roe eggs, rather it looked more like the tiny eggs had been stuck onto something crunchy inbetween. i imagine it was how it comes out of the fish though. i wasn't keen after a couple of bites, but G enjoyed it.
G went for the sake tasting "sweet flight". four sakes with a sweet accent. the fourth one called Born smelt gorgeous - floral but not overpowering.
he wasn't too keen as they weren't dry enough for him. that's what happens when you order "SWEET", sweetie.
next we had our main courses.
i chose pork belly (3). delicious and so tender i could cut it with my chopsticks.
G chose sashimi - fatty tuna (4), sea urchin (5) then the wa-gyu beef (6).
he enjoyed the first two but found the texture of the beef a little off-putting. he described it as "spongey".
i highly recommend sushi taro if you enjoy good sushi and like it a little bit more daring than the usual.
this is one of the restaurant's twitter postings from last week:
WE WILL HAVE "TORA FUGU" BLOW FISH (YES, THAT'S RIGHT! ONE WITH THE STRONG POISON, KILLES MANY JAPANESE EVERY YEAR) BY MIDDLE OF DECEMBER.
