the manhattan mexicanas returned late last night from a long weekend in new york. we fed them soba when they walked in the door. it was a  bit of a homemade concoction but they said it was good. phew.

soba noodles in a miso soup, with chinese mushrooms and a large splash or two of japanese dipping sauce to give it a kick. served with pickled radish and edamame. all from hana grocery on u street.

they took megabus up on Sunday morning and back last night. great prices, i was really impressed. they stayed at the salisbury hotel in midtown and thankfully it was an authentic good deal via hotels.com. on occasion when using that site, i've found myself in a room so skanky and small, with views of a concrete wall 2 inches from the window that i have been tempted to sleep in the bath (because it's bigger than the bed and probably more hygienic).

it was L's first time in manhattan and she loved it. her favourite part was times square. eeek. times square horrifies me. the age difference is apparent in our differing reactions to locales. she's 16, gorgeous and hip. i am significantly older and we'll just leave it at that.

they had lunch at sushi yasuda. they said the sushi was delicious, fresh and beautifully served. i haven't been there but i love their business card. it's a fish. the print is slightly raised so you can feel it under your fingertips. super simple and gorgeous. so japanese.

i'm sad, they leave for mexico this afternoon. i wish they could stay with us longer. Flor will be even sadder - Isa has been spoiling her with so much cariño that she will undoubtedly suffer withdrawal symptoms. 4 nights ago, Isa had her in the bedroom with her. the puppy was in heaven. she ate a box of salsa jalapeno stock cubes, approximately 20 wrapped polvorones and a not-insignificant amount of marzipan. she had constipation for 3 days followed by the inevitable. oh just one of the joys of puppyhood. last night she once again spent the night with Isa. this morning we discovered 2 eaten books and a destroyed suitcase. clearly Flor spent all night reading and packing.

she has now been renamed the Egyptian Plague
