hazelnut and orange cake with a hazelnut dacquoise
this is the orange cake (hard to tell i know...)

the dacquoise that started off so well...!

the making of the cake...

this was one of the biggest disasters ever...i think it is because i used a glass baking dish instead of a regular "metal" one. ugh. the cake is a simple mix of eggs, sugar, ground hazelnuts, orange zest and juice. when baked in a glass container the heat doesn't conduct properly i guess, and so it took forever and still wasn't fully done inside. it was cooked enough however - it just looks odd.
second up was the dacquoise, basically a meringue with hazelnuts...tired and fed up with the trial that was the cake, i wasn't that suprised when the dacquoise didn't turn out properly either!! too much sugar i think, as it was incredibly sweet and more chewy than it should have been. being lazy i guessed the amount of powdered sugar rather than measuring it. oh dear. how come when nigella does the guessing thing it always turns out ok...??!
rather than binning everything i decided to make "something" - better than nothing, right? after 3hrs in the kitchen, i wanted to show more than a full dustbin and a bad mood.
i made sandwiches out of what i could salvage...whether they will ever be eaten is the 64 million dollar question.
