Las flores
I quite like Johnson's -especially for fresh cut flowers. They are definitely on the pricey side though. When the city you live in has so little in terms of fresh flowers, one has to bite the bullet and pay extortionate prices once in a while. We have the odd street seller but they don't go beyond the cellophane-wrapped roses sadly. London is teeming with flower stalls, and I miss them! My favourite, which I serendipitously used to live very close to, is Gilding the Lily -it's a permanent stall set up opposite South Ken tube station. They've been there 14 years and carry well-known flowers to the hard-to-get kinds such as tea roses.
Talking of roses -other than the tea rose, I am not really a fan. However, Johnson's had these today:
Beautiful colour (the first pic) that I've not seen before -it was almost grey. They are in their cold room, so I took a few pics then had to dash out. It might be 75 degs in DC today, but it's like the arctic inside their cold room.
They had some enormous and well-established camellia plants -well more like trees really. Great price too -$160 for a 5yr old plant. If you can't wait the prerequisite number of years for your plants to grow, pop along there and get them "ready made"! I was sorely tempted...especially now when spring is on her way but isn't quite here yet...
Dragging myself away from the camellias, I did pick up a hole-digger. I don't know the proper word for one of these, but you stick it in the soil to make a hole. $4 what a bargain.
I also got some new secateurs -they are the ones that Johnson's use so hopefully that is a good recommendation. The brand I was recommended if I want to go all-out is Felco -all-out in terms of gardening expertise and price...$70!?! I stuck with the ones that were closer to $18...
Johnson's is at 4200 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington D.C., 20016
Whenever I see red geraniums I think of Mexico. They grow there all year-round. Not fair. I never liked them that much when I lived in England, but seeing them in Puebla and elsewhere in Mexico made me change my mind. We grew some last year and I can see why G loves having them, they bring a bit of Mexico into our garden.
Two of my favourite flowers are the chinese peony and ranunculus. Having them in my home makes me very very happy. If only they both grew all-year round. We have some peonies in the garden and their crowns are showing, fingers crossed for lots of flowers again this year. Pinks and deep red. Perfect lipstick colours.
