kumiliki, the kenyan version of monopoly

we first saw this game in a store in lamu, kenya. it is the nairobi version of monopoly and instead of the car, plane and hotel pieces you get a lion, rhino and masaai huts! even better, all the pieces are hand-carved out of soapstone. the game is called kumiliki and we had it shipped over from nairobi. park lane = karen -the area named after karen blixen, out of africa. i watched out of africa for the first time last night. i know, shock horror, i must be the only person over the age of 30 who hadn't seen it. it made me nostalgic for kenya. hearing robert redford say "samburu" was almost like hearing him say my name. pathetic i know. in all seriousness though, what a beautiful film and it captured the stunning landscapes and topography so well. the best part for me was seeing the masaai people in the film and how much karen blixen respected them. how things have changed since her days in kenya, and i can't help but wonder just how much of it is owed to her.
