handmade chocolate and banana ice-cream

i am always looking for recipes that don't require machines - i only started using a kitchenaid quite recently. until then, all the creaming of butter and sugar, and the whisking of egg whites etc were done by hand. a great workout (no gym for me thanks), very cathartic and satisfying too, if a little mad. it appears 99.9% of ice-cream recipes use ice-cream machines :-(. i have made ice-cream without any machinery before and am stubborn, but my memory isn't good enough to remember what to do without one - so i scan a recipe, see the call for machinery and move on...frustrated. today i found a recipe for chocolate and banana ice-cream - made 100% by hand, and now i am very happy. it is on the food blog of david lebovitz.. this appears to be the most effortless and simple recipe ever, without any requirement for elbow grease (ie no stirring every hour or so) - and i can't wait to try it. recipe courtesy of david lebovitz 2 ounces (55g) bittersweet chocolate, chopped and melted 6 tablespoons (80ml) bailey's irish cream liqueur** 6 tablespoons (80ml) whole milk 1 medium banana, peeled and sliced 1 tablespoon (15ml) dark rum 1. in a small bowl set over a pan of simmering water, melt the chocolate with the milk. 2. blend the melted chocolate the baileys, the banana, and rum until smooth. 3. pour into a plastic or metal container, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours. 4. serve and enjoy (or eat directly from container whilst standing in front of the freezer). **lebovitz says "I haven't tried it with any other liquor, but for those of you who want to experiment, you do need to include a similar amount and percentage of alcohol to prevent the ice cream from freezing too hard."
