Rice - I will conquer you

I am more than half oriental yet rice confounds me. When it should be fluffy, unsticky and glorious, it is inevitably soggy, hard in places and downright revolting. As I do not currently have a rice cooker (PLEASE SEND ME ONE FOR CHRISTMAS preferably in pink), I force myself to make it in a saucepan. I do not own a microwave either but I am quite okay about that. If I cannot make something I usually fix that by making myself dislike it. Problem solved -if I don't like it, I don't cook it. However, being of the genetic make up that I am, I love rice. I can't help myself. So the quest to make perfect rice goes on. In a saucepan. I think I may have found the solution -I have done this twice now and both times I have been (secretly) thrilled at the success that is my rice. Jasmine rice. None of this short grain, long grain, medium grain crap. Just simple jasmine rice from Wholefoods. I follow it exactly as it says on the back (an achievement in itself but this calls for desperate measures) - 1 cup of rice, 1.5 cups of water -bring to boil then simmer 18 mins. I manage to resist my almost overwhelming urge to stir it, and the result is proper, edible and presentable rice.
